Acupuncture: Why you should try it!

September 23, 2014

I use acupuncture all the time in my practice and have found that it is a great modality to promote significant change in someone’s body. In Traditional Chinese Medicine the body is composed of various organ meridians. These organ meridians govern various functions in the body on both a physical and mental level. Each organ meridian has different acupuncture points that can be stimulated (needles, pressure, heat) to ameliorate symptoms that the body presents with. For example; acupuncture points on the Heart channel help more with mental agitation and sleep, whereas points on the Liver channel are better for regulating menses and headaches. A licensed and knowledgeable Naturopath or Acupuncturist will put together a plan that has different points from different meridians so that your individual plan is personally tailored to what is going on in your body.

Many patients are nervous about the concept of being needled, but are unaware that the needles are merely inserted under the skin a few centimetres. The sensation should feel dull and as if there was slight pressure but never sharp and painful after insertion. Needles are left in anywhere from 10-40 minutes and most patients find it relaxing and fall asleep during the treatment.

Acupuncture is recommended by the World Health Organization for treating over 40 diagnosable medical illnesses, but can also be used by individuals who want to optimize their state of health by increasing their immune system, boosting their energy, improving their moods and sleep.

Acupuncture can be applied to a wide variety of health concerns such as (but not limited to)

- muscle and joint pain

- sinus congestion, immune support, cough, cold/flu

-  headaches

- digestive problems (constipation, IBS, gas/bloating, reflux, nausea, etc)

- insomnia/ sleep issues

- anxiety, stress relief, relaxation

- female issues: infertility, PMS and menstrual cramps, labour preparation or induction

Most people have coverage for acupuncture through their insurance companies and never use their allotments! Try it today and see what benefits acupuncture can offer you!
